Celebrated in the Netherlands. A national holiday honoring King Willem-Alexander, the current King of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, which has been governed by members of the House of Orange-Nassau since 1815, when the Netherlands became an independent monarchy. Also known as King’s Day, celebrants often take part in “orange madness” or oranjegekte, for the national color, when the normally straight-laced Dutch let down their hair, often dyed orange for the occasion.
