Born in 1945, the great playwright spent his first 13 years here with his mother and five siblings, crammed into two rooms (later four). A Jewish family ran a small mom-and-pop store in front, and two Italian brothers repaired shoes and watches next door — Jewish and Italian and Black, the three major groups in the once-multiethnic Hill that turned almost entirely Black after 1968.

Emmanuel Ceramics LLC makes unique ceramic home goods. Inspired by her mother’s love of gardening and women’s handicrafts, Emmanuelle uses lace texturing, carving, and sculptural ceramic techniques to create her functional yet decorative ceramic work. Together the fabric texture impressions, clay, and glaze, capture a moment in time; like putting a memory in stone. Using vintage and antique lace, Emmanuelle creates heirlooms, gardens and memories that can last lifetimes and be used to create new memories.

Kelly Strayhorn Theater (KST) is a home for creative experimentation, community dialogue, and collective action rooted in the liberation of Black and queer people.

We welcome our home to all who uplift Black, Indigenous, people of color, and queer voices. We will continue centering historically resilient folks.

Named after 20th century entertainment legends Gene Kelly and Billy Strayhorn, both natives of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, KST is reflective of the passion that its founders had for the arts. Today, Kelly Strayhorn Theater carries on the legacy of its founders by fostering bold and innovative artistry with a global perspective. KST celebrates diversity in voice, thought, and expression, and upholds a firm commitment to inclusion. Furthermore, KST provides a safe and welcome space for dialogue and artistic expression for all who enter. Kelly Strayhorn Theater has a dynamic footprint in Pittsburgh, with two venues running along Penn Avenue. KST’s Alloy Studios is a cultural hub in the heart of East Liberty, and the historic Kelly Strayhorn Theater is located in the thriving business district. More than 20 years after the founding of the theater, KST continues to use its broad reach to impact the contemporary arts and the community.

Con Alma restaurant and jazz bar began on Ellsworth Avenue in Shadyside in 2019, and since has grown to include a location on Penn Avenue in Downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District.

Inspired by the rich heritage of jazz in Pittsburgh, Con Alma, which means “with soul,” seeks to return jazz to its rightful place at the forefront of the local music scene while providing patrons with some of the best food and drinks the city has to offer.

Both Con Alma locations showcase current Pittsburgh musicians, with occasional touring artists. Live jazz is presented Tuesday through Saturday nights on Ellsworth, Tuesday through Sunday nights, plus Sunday brunch, on Penn.  An inventive yet grounded creativity  informs a kitchen inspired by cuisine from around the world. Chef Josh Ross leads both locations with a fully plant-based menu on Ellsworth and an omnivorous menu showcased on Penn. Plates pair in harmony with house invented cocktails and a meticulously selected wine list featuring varietals from all over the world.

Black girls run? Of course we do. In 2009, Black Girls RUN! was created in an effort to tackle the growing obesity epidemic in the African-American community and provide encouragement and resources to both new and veteran runners. The mission of Black Girls RUN! is to encourage African-American women to make fitness and healthy living a priority. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 80% of African-American women are overweight. BGR! wants to create a movement to lower that percentage and subsequently, lower the number of women with chronic diseases associated with an unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle.
