Board Member Terms and Responsibilities
TERMS: Three consecutive terms, each of a three-year duration.
ATTENDANCE: Regular attendance at all board meetings, assigned committee meetings and special board events is expected. Board meetings are held at least 6 times a year. Standing board committees (executive, finance, and marketing) will meet as necessary, usually 6-8 times a year. Special committees, established for fundraising events such as the annual Gala or for other purposes, will meet as necessary to accomplish assigned responsibilities.
ACCOUNTABILITY: To the Chairman of the Board of Directors.
RESIGNATION: In writing to the Chairman of the Board of Directors.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
General:
- Be informed about the mission, services, policies and programs of River City Brass (RCB).*
- Become familiar with the bylaws of the corporation and ensure they are upheld.*
- Review the agenda and supporting materials prior to participation in board and committee meetings.
- Become knowledgeable about and conversant with the strategic and business plans of RCB.*
- Assume leadership roles as requested and possible, including participation on at least one board committee.
- Assist with developing viable succession plans and identifying and recruiting strong board members who can capably carry out these plans.
- Attend at least a couple of RCB concerts or events annually.

Strategic:
- Assist in the development and revision of goals for the board’s strategic plan.
- Support the implementation and monitoring of RCB’s strategic direction.
- Keep up to date on the field of performing arts organizations, providing advice and counsel regarding new operating practices that are cutting edge.
Personnel:
- Hire and participate in the evaluation of the Executive/Artistic Director.
- Approve and review personnel policies, including the staff performance appraisal system.
Fundraising:
- Support staff in identifying and securing financial resources for programs and operations.
- Participate in fundraising events.
- Make an annual pledge to RCB for each three-year term.
Marketing and Outreach:
- Represent RCB in the community, informing funding agencies, policy makers and other parties about the organization as appropriate.
- Initiate and develop contacts that serve to enhance RCB’s ability to carry out its mission.
