POSITION SUMMARY
This Law Clerk position offers law students interested in non-traditional careers in government and public service valuable hands-on experience.  The role provides exposure to general government operations and the workings of the City of Pittsburgh, particularly the Pittsburgh Commission on Human Relations (PghCHR). Responsibilities may include researching and developing policies, analyzing legal and non-legal sources, reviewing data and evidence, drafting reports and recommendations, improving processes, managing time-sensitive assignments, and maintaining databases and records.

Eligible law students may receive academic credit if they meet their law school’s requirements. Supervising staff will coordinate with the student’s institution to ensure all criteria are satisfied. Students who are not seeking academic credit are also encouraged to apply.

REQUIREMENTS
General Application Requirements:

Applicants must submit a complete application, including education, work experience, a resume (if applicable), and completed supplemental questions.
For unpaid internships, City residency is not required.

NOTE: Candidates being considered for employment must submit official transcripts verifying post-secondary education (college/university, trade school, etc.) before hire.

QUALIFYING REQUIREMENTS: Your work experience and education/training will be evaluated to determine if you meet the qualifying eligibility requirements listed below for this position. You will receive notice of your eligibility status via email.

WORK EXPERIENCE: None required for this position. Preferred experience involving writing, legal analysis, and/or customer service.
EDUCATION/TRAINING: Must be currently enrolled and taking classes in an accredited School of Law.
EQUIVALENCY: None permitted for this position.

CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATIONS
If you meet the qualifying requirements listed above, you will be sent a letter of admission (when applicable) for the following examination(s). You must pass the written and/or performance examination(s) in order to have your name placed on the official Civil Service eligibility list for this position. Candidates who receive job offers must pass a medical examination (when applicable) prior to start date.

POSITION DUTIES
Researches, analyzes, and helps develop policies, rules, regulations, and City ordinances, including amendments thereto.
Compiles and summarizes reference material for Commissioners and staff.
Contributes to departmental goals by completing assigned tasks and projects.
Coordinates work in conjunction with project timelines.
Per request and availability, attends professional development meetings and/or training.
Attends regular check-in meetings with supervisors.
May analyze data, complete surveys, conduct research, and develop and write reports.
May help update written materials and handouts for dissemination to the public.
May help to plan, organize, attend, record, and track community outreach, special, and educational events, including some evening and weekend events.
May attend PghCHR public hearings, court proceedings, staff, and monthly PghCHR meetings, including occasional evening meetings.
May attend public meetings held by other government/public agencies, such as URA public meetings and City Council public hearings.
Adheres to all laws, rules, regulations, policies, principles, and procedures regarding anti-discrimination and the protection and non-disclosure of confidential and non-public information, documents, etc.
May assist in compiling records responsive to Right-to-Know Law requests.
Performs such other related tasks and duties that are assigned or required.
