Manager, LAMP Studio & Volunteers

Job Summary: The LAMP Studio & Volunteer Manager is responsible for the effective management of the Library of Accessible Media for Pennsylvanians (LAMP) volunteer program, which consists of over 60 diverse volunteers.

This role requires a leader with strong emotional intelligence who can direct the program by implementing clear processes and procedures. The core mission is to guide volunteers in the creation of accessible audiobooks that meet the standards for upload to the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS) of the Library of Congress.

The Manager works collaboratively as a vital part of the LAMP management team. Under the general supervision of the LAMP Library Administrator, the Manager leads the organization and operation of LAMP’s Recorded Books Program and Volunteer Services at LAMP.

A successful candidate will possess and demonstrate a high degree of technological aptitude, great organizational skills, and a natural curiosity for continuous learning and improvement.

Location: CLP-LAMP, Pittsburgh, PA.

Work Hours:  37.5 hours per week; Monday – Friday
Compensation:  $65,000/year

Essential Functions: 
Coordinates volunteers to produce accessible books for Pennsylvania’s print-disabled patrons for the Library of Congress’ BARD platform, focusing on increasing volunteer retention, production quality, and submission volume;
Develops comprehensive volunteer onboarding procedures and establishes policies governing all phases of volunteering at LAMP and accessible book production;
Selects titles for recording across all reading levels and appropriately pairs narrators to books based on various criteria;
Plays a key role on the LAMP Management Team, guiding initiatives and coordinating volunteer integration into programming with department heads;
Fosters strategic partnerships with key local, state, and national organizations, including the Library of Congress’ National Library Service and Pennsylvania’s Office of Commonwealth Libraries;
Delivers outstanding service by communicating with patrons, staff and volunteers and maintaining working knowledge of Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, The Library of Congress’ National Library Service Program, BARD and Bookshare;
Prepares quarterly and annual reports on volunteer and recorded books program impact, and compiles statistics for state and national library stakeholders.
Additional Responsibilities:
Must complete and maintain NLS training on audiobook production standards, including digital book creation, file protection, bibliographic accuracy, and BARD packaging, to ensure secure, high-quality submissions;
Collects compelling volunteer and patron stories for publication across LAMP, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, and partner digital platforms;
Supports virtual and in-person community engagement through tours, trainings, outreach, programs, and digital networking;
Develops and maintains partnerships with libraries, agencies, and communities at all levels to support effective service delivery;
Coordinates with vendors to manage software licenses, procure studio hardware, and support systems for recording and production;
Develops staff skills through coaching, learning opportunities, and empowerment to foster innovation and achieve library goals;
Enhances professional knowledge through development opportunities, conferences, and collaboration with peers at Network Libraries and NLS;
Ensures compliance with NLS and CLP standards for special collections, focusing on policies for intellectual access and control;
Actively educates and serves patrons across all of LAMP’s physical and digital platforms;
Promotes alignment with Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh Service Standards across physical and virtual services by collaborating with staff, managers, and volunteers at CLP and the Free Library of Philadelphia’s LAMP program to ensure a high-quality patron experience;
Evaluates and recommends improvements to the current processes and scheduling of the LAMP volunteers and LAMP services to respond to the changing needs of the library and its users;
Performs other duties as assigned.
Competencies and Qualifications:
Communicate positively, professionally, and effectively in both written and verbal channels;
Demonstrate and maintain a high level of organization and emotional intelligence;
Ability to build meaningful relationships with individuals across a wide range of ages and backgrounds;
Ability to learn and teach others audiobook recording software such as Adobe Audition and Hindenburg;
Strong proficiency with digital tools, content management systems, and production software;
Demonstrated ability to lead and direct a team effectively, providing strong leadership to achieve organizational goals;
Demonstrate and maintain a passion for accessibility and a proven commitment to fostering an inclusive, intergenerational volunteer community;
Demonstrate and maintain a strong aptitude with technology and software, especially ability to operate studio hardware;
Maintains knowledge of National Library Service practices, trends.

Education and Experience:
Master’s Degree in Library Sciences from an ALA accredited university preferred, or similar advanced degree; combination of experience and Bachelor’s degree may be considered;
Knowledge of, or aptitude and willingness to learn and teach others audiobook recording software such as Adobe Audition and Hindenburg, as well as operate studio hardware;
Five (5) years of recent, relevant experience in library management of staff and/or volunteers or providing related leadership and services at a public, Network or academic library;
Experience coordinating, scheduling, managing, and working with volunteers;
Experience in planning and managing projects;
Advanced knowledge and ongoing professional development related to technological acumen;
Technological aptitude, including the ability to adapt to new technologies;
Knowledge of editing, production and recording software preferred; experience with Microsoft Office.
Physical and Environmental Conditions:

Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts, which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices or meeting rooms, e.g., use of safe workplace practices with office equipment, and/or avoidance of trips and falls.  Also precautions for working with studio equipment, and related hardware and software.
Must be able to work in person full-time hours, and/or extended hours with schedule changes including evenings or weekends, as needed.
Ability to independently travel for programs or extended services.
