POSITION SUMMARY
The Department of Mobility and Infrastructure is seeking innovative and enthusiastic interns interested in helping to achieve the department’s mission, which is to provide the physical mobility to support the social and economic mobility of the citizens of Pittsburgh through the management, design, improvement, and operation of the public street rights of way. All interns interested in the field of transportation are encouraged to apply. Applicants majoring in Engineering, Architecture, Urban Planning, Public Policy, Geographical Information Systems, or a related degree are preferred.
Interns would have the opportunity to work in one or more of the following Bureaus within the department:
Planning, Policy, and Permitting is responsible for the comprehensive vision, guiding policies, and permitted uses of the urban mobility network and public rights of way. In 2026, this division will be leading neighborhood transportation planning projects, creating new polices for autonomous and shared vehicles, and transitioning the city’s right-of-way permit process into a new, computer-based platform.
Transportation Operations oversees the City’s overall transportation and mobility network, which includes traffic design/flow, pavement markings and signage, and the maintenance and operation of overhead traffic control signals and other electronic traffic control devices city-wide. In 2020, the Bureau began designing and installing over 25 miles of new bicycle infrastructure and numerous traffic calming and pedestrian safety improvement projects throughout the City.
Project Design and Delivery is responsible for all major capital improvement projects for the City’s transportation or mobility infrastructure, such as street and bridge work, providing engineering services to address major slope failure, and addressing flood control needs.

POSITION DUTIES
Contributes to departmental goals by completing assigned tasks and projects
Coordinates work in conjunction with project timelines.
Analyzes statistical data, completes surveys, performs research and develops reports.
Maintains supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipates needed supplies; places and expedites orders for supplies; verifies receipt of supplies.
Provides general administrative support to staff.
Provides primary phone coverage (first to answer all incoming calls).
Performs such other related tasks and duties that are assigned or required.
