April is Diversity Month, a time to recognize and celebrate other cultures and populations. During the pandemic, we have all witnessed the cancellations of numerous major events and celebrations in an effort to keep us healthy and safe. We may be mourning what we’ve missed, or we were lucky enough to use technology and transform those happenings into virtual experiences. Either way, the good news is we can still celebrate diversity together, while apart. This month, take time to recognize the diversity in your workplace, virtually. By celebrating the unique cultures, backgrounds and traditions of others, we gain a greater appreciation for the diversity that surrounds us.
Here are four ways to celebrate Diversity Month and engage your team while physically working apart:
Host a virtual multicultural movie watch party…
Invite colleagues to watch multicultural and foreign films. You can even ask guests to email a snack or food recipe to munch on that represents a different country or culture.

Attend a cultural art exhibit virtually…
Pittsburgh is home to many international and cultural art exhibits. Luckily, museums near and far have opened exhibits for virtual experiences. Invite team members to learn more about other cultures through the lens of fine and contemporary art. Start a virtual visit now.
Invite employees to share music playlists from around the world including special quarantine playlists…
Celebrate the diversity of your employees and coworkers by asking them to share examples of music and videos from their own culture or heritage. You can find some examples of those lists here.
Support local minority-owned businesses for virtual team meetings…
Order delivery or pick-up from the same local minority-owned business or utilize services from a minority vendor to show your support for their establishment. Click here for a list of minority owned restaurants.
